Lyra Belacqua - Hero’s Journey
Lyra Belacqua - Hero’s Journey
The Mundane World
Lyra lives in Oxford at a place called Jordan College. Her dæmon Pantalaimon, is her dearest friend. A dæmon is an animal-formed, shape-shifting representation of someone’s soul.
The Call To Adventure
Her friend Roger is kidnapped by the “Gobblers”, which are the topic of superstition and myth to Lyra and all the children who live around her.
Crossing The Threshold
Lyra meets Marisa Coulter, a woman of extreme importance. Mrs. Coulter offers Lyra a chance to be her apprentice, and taking this apprenticeship would give her a chance to find her friend Roger. She accepts Mrs. Coulter’s offer and her journey truly begins.
The Path of Trials
Before Lyra accepted Mrs. Coulter’s offer, she was given an alethiometer by the Master of College. It’s a device that has the power to reveal the answer of any question asked by the user. Although she doesn’t know how to use it just yet, Lyra can tell how important it is. She must guard this priceless artifact carefully.
After Mrs. Coulter reveals herself to be the head of the Gobblers, Lyra flees and meets up with the Gyptians. They are a nomadic people who live on boats. Lyra learns that the Gobblers are experimenting with all the children that have been disappearing by cutting the bond between them and their dæmons.
Lyra saves Roger and has to go save her father, Lord Asriel. When she gets to him, he has managed to get all the equipment to continue his experiments on something called Dust. Roger is killed when he is severed from his dæmon and tears huge hole in the sky to another world. Lyra follows her father through.
Master of Two Worlds
Lyra is not completely done with all of her journey. She still has a lot to learn, but she has mastered and bettered herself since the beginning of the book. She bravely faces a new journey by following her father through the tear into the other world.

Joseph Campbell first explored the Hero’s Journey in The Hero With A Thousand Faces and it has been thoroughly studied ever since. For the Hero Construction Company I’ve reduced it to five steps for easier digestion.
