Helena Campbell - Hero’s Journey
Helena Campbell - Hero’s Journey
The Mundane World
Helena’s parents work in a circus. She plays her part in the performances as well. However, Helena dreams of running away to join the real world.
The Call To Adventure
One night after a performance, Helena’s mother collapses and is taken to hospital. Helena blames herself because she had argued with her mother previously. The night before the surgery, Helena wakes up in a dream like world where she witnesses two men swallowed by darkness.
Crossing The Threshold
Along with a man named Valentine, Helena meets with the Prime Minister who explains that the Princess of the Land of Shadow (who looks a lot like Helena) has stolen something from the Land of the Light. Helena offers to help and thus enters the new world.
The Path of Trials
With Valentine, Helena travels the new world trying to find what has been stolen. She realises that her drawings from the real world are acting as some sort of entryways between worlds. She also learns that the item stolen is the MirrorMask.
Valentine ends up handing Helena over to the Dark Queen who tricks her in to thinking she is the princess. After some time Valentine regrets his actions and returns to break the spell, allowing them to search, and find, the MirrorMask. They find that the Princess has swapped places with Helena and manage to swap back using the MirrorMask and one of Helena’s drawings.
Master of Two Worlds
Safely back in the real world, Helena finds that her mother’s surgery has been a success. She apologizes to her parents for her wishing to run away and happily joins in the circus life. She has learned how important her family is.

Joseph Campbell first explored the Hero’s Journey in The Hero With A Thousand Faces and it has been thoroughly studied ever since. For the Hero Construction Company I’ve reduced it to five steps for easier digestion.
