Nancy Brinker - Hero’s Journey
Nancy Brinker - Hero’s Journey
The Mundane World
Nancy went to college and began working in the public relations world for several companies.
The Call To Adventure
Nancy got a very literal call to adventure. While working in Dallas, Texas, she received a call from her sister Susan Komen. She found out that doctors had found a lump in Susan’s breast and that she would be starting treatment for breast cancer.
Crossing The Threshold
Nancy chose to go back home to support her sister. When she arrived home she found out that Susan would undergo surgery to remove the cancer from her breast.
The Path of Trials
Over the next three years, Nancy supported her sister and family while Susan received treatments for breast cancer. Susan traveled to several different hospitals, went through many treatments and recurrences. After three years Susan lost her battle with cancer.
Recognizing that early recognition, advanced screening, and quality care were vital to stopping breast cancer, Nancy created the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The mission of this foundation is to eradicate the disease by improving research, screening, education, and treatment.
Master of Two Worlds
To raise money for the foundation, Nancy created the Breast Cancer 3 Day walk. This even now takes place all over the world and all funding raised goes toward the foundation in order to help with their mission.

Joseph Campbell first explored the Hero’s Journey in The Hero With A Thousand Faces and it has been thoroughly studied ever since. For the Hero Construction Company I’ve reduced it to five steps for easier digestion.
